Yeşim Textile Inc. gets full marks for social compliance

Yeşim Textile Inc. has earned the right to receive the SA 8000 certificate, which is one of the most prestigious certificates worldwide concerning social compliance, for the fourth time.

Since 2005, Yeşim Textile Inc. is granted the SA 8000 certificate, which is one of the most prestigious certificates worldwide concerning social compliance, and our company’s reliability in this field has been attested once more in the audits performed last month within our company. Being the first manufacturer of ready-to-wear clothing in Turkey having been awarded with the SA 8000 certificate, it has continued its activities and endeavours concerning the topic social compliance during the last nine years, and thus has earned the right to receive this certificate for the fourth time. Yeşim Textile Inc. is one of eight companies in Turkey being awarded with this certificate, and it is striking, as it is continuing its activities and endeavours in this field at the same pace over the years.

Within the scope of those audits having been performed by independent international auditing company Intertek, the management system comprising criteria such as non-employment of child workers, non-employment using force and/or obligation, taking of those measures that are necessary for occupational health and safety, choosing of their representatives by the workers themselves, applying of the non-discrimination principle between the employees, avoiding of harassment and maltreatment, as well as the compliance with legal regulations concerning working hours and payments, was reviewed. Moreover, Yeşim Textile Inc. does also undertake with this certificate that it will provide the conditions of social compliance, not only within its own structure, but also with its suppliers and its contract manufacturers.

Şenol Şankaya, CEO of Yeşim Textile Inc., evaluated this topic as follows: “Despite the problems experienced in our sector over the years and to date, we never discontinued our activities and endeavours concerning social compliance and sustainability. Yeşim Textile Inc. adopting the understanding of “People First”, spent time and money for, and made best efforts on this issue. If it is believed that an ongoing granting of such a certificate would be guaranteed by the multi-topic audits performed, the fact that Yeşim Textile Inc. is granted this certificate for nine years now, and that is has earned the right to be awarded with this certificated for the fourth time in a row, is an indicator for our success and our determination in this concern. The SA 8000 Certificate is characterized by being the first universal ethic standard worldwide. Currently, 3,388 companies worldwide are holding this certificate, but only eight of them are located in Turkey. Besides Yeşim Textile Inc., the other companies in Turkey being granted with the SA 8000 Certificate are Alarko Carrier, Çak Textiles, Izgaz Inc., Setaş Kimya chemicals, Soyak Holding, Topkapı Iplik Yarns, and Eren Textiles, respectively.

WHAT IS “SA 8000”?

 

The SA 8000 Standard generated by “Social Accountability International New York (SAI)” company defines the social responsibility of employers, suppliers, customers, and towards society. SAI is a non-profit organization founded on the principle of voluntariness, and with the aim to develop, to apply, and to monitor an auditable standard. This first Social Management Standard – the SA 8000 – aiming at generating a certification and control system at a corporate level, and at an universally sustainable development, is auditing known social parameters such as child labour, working hours, and occupational health and safety. The logic of the SA 8000 is based on the ISO management system, and it is providing continuous development of such management systems in the sense of corporate performance. The certification process, however, comprises five steps. In a first step, an analysis on social performance and operations is made, and a performance survey is performed. In order to constitute a management system, which is the second step, the generation of means such as the necessary education/training, the staff’s qualification, and guidelines are dealt with. After the pre- audit preparations being the third step, the forth step, or revision phase, is applied, and lastly, the fifth stage, with its certification procedure, grants companies the right to receive this certificate.
